WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

Andy Harris, Staverton. MGBGT 1971

TONIGHT

We hope that our friends from Northants MGOC will be visiting us, so please extend a warm welcome. As announced last month, we have kindly been invited to participate in the NMGOC Barnsdale Gardens run on 18 July, and I know numerous people have expressed an interest. Barbara from NMGOC will be here tonight to provide more details.

CAR PARKING AT THE RED LION

When we started our natter, we were low in numbers and the pub was not well attended.

Both are now booming. We have around 40 people each meeting and Tom has a much enlarged group of regulars. All this means that car parking can get very tight. This may be even more acute tonight with our NMGOC visitors, and (we hope) a nice summer evening. Our later arriving members already double park on an ad-hoc basis, so we are going to try developing this a bit further tonight by marshalling members close together in blocks at the top end of the car park as they arrive. If you need to leave early, we will try to find you a place with easy egress….. That is the idea anyway…lets see how it goes……

The BBQ we were hoping to arrange has had to be abandoned for now as the pub is not in a position to cater for it.

We may look at holding one later on at a separate venue.

WHAT HAPPENED IN MAY

Mike, David, Reg, Terry, & Dave Cotgrave attended the Cummins Fete on the 22nd.

Weather was glorious and there was an interesting collection of cars & bikes ranging through 1952 Morris Commercial light lorry, a Corvette, several interesting hot rods, and a 300,000 mile Vincent Black Shadow, 240,000 miles with the current owner,

……..plus a few old MGs.

EVENTS IN JUNE/JULY

3-4 June: MGCC MG Live! At Silverstone on 3-4 June

27 June: Princethorpe: Run in morning, Fete/gathering in afternoon.

10 July: Fete at Woodford-cum-Membris 12pm to 8pm and classics are invited.

Kilsby are proposing to hold a mini display there, so for anyone wishing to attend, please see Terry who has more details and entry forms. (£5.00 to be in by 18 June).

(in response to many queries, we think that Woodford-cum-Membris is the ecclesiastical parish of Woodford Halse).

8 July: Annual BBQ & Concours at The Bell, Beachampton.

Meet up at 6.45 in layby on A5 at Weedon near Clarke’s garage.

18 July: Northants MGOC run to Barnsdale Gardens (Oakham). (See above)

HOLLOWELL Steam and Heavy Horse Show on 3-4 July

Too late to enter now, but we have a good number of cars and people on both days to provide what we hope will be our usual comprehensive display. Some will be camping overnight I believe.

A reminder that we are making the MG Octagon Club event at Middleton Hall on August 22nd our summer run this year.

Pre-entry is required, so please (again) see Terry who has forms.

OTHER NEWS

As many will know, two of the club’s most popular & enthusiastic members, Richard and Claire, are leaving us .

They moved to St Neots last Friday in order to be closer to their places of work and cut down on the enormous amount of travelling they have both been doing. This makes every sense for them, but we will be sorry to see them, (and their yellow Midget), go. Tonight we will be presenting them with a John Lewis voucher on behalf of us all.

Good luck to them both in their new home. They will be with us at Hollowell this year, and I’m sure we will continue to see them around from time to time.

MAY 2010 NEWSLETTER

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

George & Daphne Greaves, Woodford Halse. MGTF

WHAT HAPPENED IN APRIL

I understand that the MGB Register spring run was blessed with good weather and was a very successful.

Tony Lake and Steve Heath marshalled at the MGCC Curborough Spring Sprint and reported a good event.

We had a good turnout and a fine if chilly evening for our visit to Rugby Morris Minor OC on 20 April. We were well received and also did well in the raffle!!.

Our SIGNPOST RUN in support of the FBHVC St George’s “Drive it Day” was much enjoyed by all 16 participating crews. Ed had planned a very scenic route and produced some excellent photos and maps. There was little time for conversation at the start as everyone pored over the clues trying to identify the locations and the best route. On the run, some teams went clockwise and others anticlockwise, so there was plenty of meeting up along the way. Everyone (eventually) made it back and the worthy winner as David Smith in his TF. If I remember correctly, the theoretical minimum route mileage was about 42, and David and his wife were not far off this. Sue and I did 50 and felt reasonably pleased with our efforts. We got all the answers but did have a certain amount of additional mileage in the Thornby area when we failed to find one of the signs straight away. I gather that the highest reported mileage was 72.… Thanks again to Ed for organising the run.

EVENTS IN MAY

Nothing specific planned for May although no doubt members will have various events to attend.

I notice that the events calendar on our website lists a “Rose of the Shires” run for 16th May.

This is in error, as NMGOC are having a well deserved rest this year.

Cummins Engine Co are holding a fete in Daventry on 22nd May (afternoon) and classic cars are invited .

I will be attending & all Kilsby members are welcome, but am not yet sure of the venue.

Dave Cotgrave can provide more details.

OTHER FUTURE EVENTS

MGCC MG Live! At Silverstone on 3-4 June

Anyone offering help for set-up or during the event can get free tickets…Terry will have the details if you are interested.

There is a fete at Woodford-cum-Membris on 10 July 12pm to 8pm and classics are invited.

Kilsby are proposing to hold a mini display there, so for anyone wishing to attend, please see Terry who has more details and entry forms.

A reminder that we are making the MG Octagon Club event at Middleton Hall on August 22nd our summer run this year. Pre-entry is required, so please (again) see Terry who has forms.

HOLLOWELL Steam and Heavy Horse Show on 3-4 July

Reminder that all entries have to be in by 30th May

OTHER NEWS

Our raffle at the April meeting raised about £40.00 to bolster club funds .

I will be absent from the May meeting as all being well Sue and I will have just arrived on the Isle of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides for a 10 day holiday

RECENT EVENTS

The “Evening With Mike Costin” on 17 March was a great success.
Mike was on excellent form and the evening was much enjoyed by all.
Thanks to everyone who made the night possible, especially Chris and Mavis, Steve and Leonie, and Sue, Pat, Betty, Stella and Shelagh for the excellent buffet.
The evening raised £230.00 towards Mike’s nominated charity, the Sywell Flying Scholarship

The visit to Northants MGOC at Sywell on 28 March went very well, the weather being relatively good (dry but cold wind). We had about 12 cars/couples attending, some going direct, others in a group from the Red Lion. We were well received by NMGOC, and we thank them for their hospitality.
There was a good variety of MGs from both clubs in the car parks at the Aviator.
Thanks also to Richard Barker, who arranged the event, and made possible something that we had intended to do for some years but never made happen. We have invited NMGOC for a reciprocal visit to us during the summer.

The first of this years Classic gatherings at the Village Garage, Upper Boddington was not held as anticipated on Sunday 4 April, perhaps sensibly as it was Easter Sunday. We assume that there will be a gathering on the first Sunday in May.

Brian, Noel, Terry & Tony marshalled at a stage of the ‘Flying Scotsman’ trial held at Buckingham Railway Centre, and reported a good day out.

COMING UP
Some members will be marshalling at the MGCC Spring Sprint at Curborough this Sunday (11th).

18th April

MGCC ‘B’ Register Spring Run

20th April (Tuesday).

Our visit to Rugby Morris Minor Owners Club at their meeting at St Andrews Rugby Club, Ashlawn Road, Rugby. Arrive there about 7.30 pm. Due to close proximity to most of our members, probably not worth doing a group run, so I suggest everyone goes direct.

Sunday 25th April.

Our “SIGNPOST RUN” in support of FBHVC ‘Drive It Day‘.
10.00am start from the Red Lion on an undisclosed route returning to the Red Lion.
Those wanting Lunch are recommended to book it for 2.00pm.
This run planned by Ed, who won it last year…this years winner will be expected to plan next year.

Sunday May 2nd
..Boddington Classic Car gathering
..AWC Day out, Abingdon

OTHER NEWS
Further to the theft/vandalism at the Hollowell showground noted in last month‘s newsletter, your committee decided to make a substantial donation to their damage appeal. We have received a nice letter of appreciation from Allan Eaton MBE on behalf of Hollowell. See Rick if you want to see this.
Our rationale for this donation was that many of our members get a great deal of pleasure from attending the Rally, and Kilsby MG gets good publicity for itself due to the quality display that we put on. The Rally raises large amounts for charitable causes, and by supporting the Hollowell team at their time of need we can show solidarity with them we can help ensure that the 2010 event will go ahead as planned.

One of the NMGOC members mentioned that they had recently booked a day on a rolling road at Marlin Motorsport in Bletchley. By booking the rolling road for a day, the cost was about £35.00 per car, which is good value. For this you get a power curve at the wheels, corrected to flywheel, and information on mixture and timing setup. You do not get any adjustments “on roller”, but you can make your own adjustments after your session, then revisit the rollers later in the day at no extra cost.
If there is sufficient interest, we could arrange a visit. We have two candidates so far.

MARCH 2010 NEWSLETTER

RECENT EVENTS
Our annual dinner went well although attendance was a bit down due to the uncertain weather

The Stoneleigh Spares Day was also hit by snow early on, although it did not prevent a good many Kilsby people from attending.

COMING UP SOON
17 March. "Evening with Mike Costin" at Willoughby Cricket Club: 7.00 for 7.30
Now technically sold out although we could probably squeeze in a couple of further club members if anyone still wants to go.

28 March. Sunday Lunchtime Visit to Northants MGOC at the Aviator, Sywell.
Either meet up in Red Lion Car Park for approx 11.00am departure, or if travelling separately, arrive at Sywell around 12.00 noon.

4 April. First of this year's Sunday Lunchtime Classic Car meets at the Village garage, Boddington.

OTHER ITEMS
We are pleased to announce that Noel Lahiff is now our new club treasurer.

Club Weekend away at Buxton on 1/2/3 October.
Places still available. See Rick or Dave Cotgrave.
All deposits for this now overdue, so if you have already booked and not paid, please cough up tonight.

Future Bruntingthorpe Driving Test & Aviation Museum Visit
An initial informal approach to the owners of Bruntingthorpe has been positive so we will report later when we have developed things further.

Hollowell 3/4 July
Previous entrants will have already received their entry forms.
We will be doing our usual 2 day display with 12 or so cars. I have a few spare entry forms for anyone needing one.
Incidentally, you may have seen that Hollowell were recently hit by thieves who stripped the toilet blocks.
They are appealing for refurbishment funds. Our committee will meet tonight to consider a proposal for a Kilsby donation to the fund.

FEBRUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER

Well done to the hardy 8 or so members who braved the elements to get to the January meeting. As someone said, it was just like the old days with everyone round one table. Because of the limited attendance, we did not hold our quarterly raffle, and due to the proximity of the dinner have now decided to postpone the first one until our April meeting.

This may be the 'close season' as far as most motoring activities are concerned but we still have quite a few items for this month.

ANNUAL DINNER

Our next event on 18 Feb here at the Red Lion. All tickets now reserved. But a few people still need to finalise their menu choices tonight so that we can advise Tom tonight.

WEEKEND AWAY 1/2/3 October (Buxton)

We have only 3 firm bookings so far, so hurry up and confirm as the hotel needs the reservation money very soon.
£50.00 deposit per couple. (£135.00 per couple per night, 2 or 3 nights) Full details were in December newsletter.

CLUB TREASURER

Ed Tyler who has done an outstanding job as our first nominated treasurer and has equipped us with bank account, cheque book etc, and has seen us to a good state of financial health (no quantitative easing in Kilsby MG Club!!), has reluctantly decided to stand down due to pressure of work. Many thanks to Ed for all he has done. We are in process of arranging a handover to another member who has "volunteered" to take over in principle, and when this is finalised (hopefully tonight) we will be able to announce this.

"AN EVENING WITH MIKE COSTIN"

17th March at Willoughby Cricket Club

Subject to final confirmation with Chris Parker, this is now arranged. Terry will be circulating tonight to reserve places.
This will be a ticket only event, with tickets at £7.50 to include a free buffet being laid on by the Kilsby MG ladies.
We are limited to 50 places (plus the ladies who as "catering staff" will not be charged).
Ticketing priority will be:

 1) Kilsby MG club members and invited guests.

2) Willoughby CC members (only a few expected).

3) Sywell Aero Club members if any.

 4) OFLC members.

 4) Others.
After deduction of buffet expenses and a small donation to Willoughby CC, all proceeds will be donated to a charity of Mike's choice, so please see this event as an opportunity for Kilsby to make a substantial charitable contribution this year.

EVENTS LIST

Pete Moore will very soon be updating the list on the website, so please take a look.
Added dates will include Silverstone MG Live!, MGCC race meetings, and Boddington Classic car gatherings.

BODDINGTON CLASSIC CAR GATHERING

Richard Barker confirms that the first 2010 gathering will be Sunday lunchtime 4th April.
I am sure that several of us will be going.

2010 EVENTS
Some of the tentative dates are now being firmed up and after further information expected tonight I will be updating the list now on the website.

POSSIBLE TALK ON 17 MARCH
Chris Parker has very kindly sounded out Mike Costin (Joint founder of Cosworth, racing driver for Colin Chapman, amateur pilot and builder of his own aircraft) about the possibility of a talk. Mike has been a towering figure in motor racing and engineering for many years, and this is a tremendous opportunity for Kilsby MG Club. We are still finalising arrangements, but at present the 17th March is the tentative date, possibly at Willoughby Cricket Club (courtesy of Steve Tromans). Numbers would be limited, possibly to around 50, and the event will also be open to invited guests, possibly other MG clubs, Cummins Engine Co associates, Old Farts etc. Cost is likely to be around £5.00 per head (pre-sold tickets only), going to a charity of Mike's choosing after a deduction to cover WCC costs.
The format for the evening will be "An Evening with Mike Costin", whereby Mike would reminisce about his career, and then the floor would be open for questions, which we intend to invite before the event and manage them to provide a balance of Mike's many experiences. A roving microphone is required...anybody able to loan one???

FUTURE EVENTS
MG SPARES DAY...NAC...21st FEBRRUARY
